A product key is an activation credential, often a 25-character code. It is not an invoice or a complete license agreement. Activation confirms that a product key was accepted; it does not, by itself, establish ownership, genuine status, transfer rights or compliance with the applicable license agreement. Keep your invoice and licensing documentation.
Understand the channel
- Retail, OEM and volume offers have different use and transfer conditions. Read the actual terms for your purchase.
- A volume MAK or KMS activation mechanism is part of an organization’s licensing setup. It is not a general promise that a standalone key can be resold or used by anyone.
- A subscription entitlement, a perpetual license and a digital activation record are different things. Confirm which one is supplied.
Keep records and verify the offer
Keep the invoice, product description, license documentation and seller correspondence. Confirm permitted users or devices, region, platform, transfer conditions and any upgrade prerequisite before payment. Microsoft provides digital-download buying guidance with warnings about separately sold keys.
If activation fails
Use only the official process for the purchased license. Keep your key private and do not use unofficial activators. Contact support@softwareinstore.com with your order number and error message. Covered unresolved issues reported within 180 days of purchase can qualify for replacement or refund under our Refund Policy.
